Special music for Sunday, November 8, 2009
In observance of the bicentennial of the death of Franz Joseph Haydn, the service included two works of this great composer.
Missa
Brevis in F was presented within
the context of the liturgy of our Mass
by our Choir, a small orchestra and
vocal soloists conducted by Anne Weaver.
Also, Haydn's Organ Concerto in F major served as the prelude, offering, and postlude and featured organ and strings conducted by John Mange.
We are blessed with the extraordinary group of musicians who participated in this musical and spiritual event.
Matthew Cron, organist. Matt has been Organist of Immanuel for the past twenty years. He has a bachelors degree from UMass Amherst, a Masters from Smith College, and a Ph.D. in musicology from Brandeis University. He has taught at Harvard University (where he won two distinguished teaching awards) and at the New England Conservatory of Music. His scholarly work has been cited in the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians and in the German music encyclopedia Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart. He is a research assistant at Harvard University (currently working on Beethoven's Sketchbooks) and is a music typographer who has designed musical examples for books published by Harvard University Press, Cambridge University Press, University of Illinois Press, University of Rochester Press, G. Schirmer, and W. W. Norton. Kathryn Spurgin, soprano. A junior at ARHS, Kate has been involved with many of its Theater Co, Dance Theater Ensemble, and musical productions. She studies voice with Lois Smith. Cynthia Caporazo, soprano. An overseer of early childhood education grants for the Springfield public schools, Cindy has a degree in voice in Music Education. She has been involved in community theater and has sung with the Springfield Symphony Chorus. She studies voice with Lois Smith. Carolyn Walker, violin. A founder and faculty member of Red Oaks Strings, she holds a B.M. in Music Education with teaching certification in K-12 from the UMass and is currently completing a Master of Music degree in Music Theory. She teaches violin and beginner viola privately in her Leverett studio. She has worked under Patrick Smith and Laurie Rabut in the Amherst Public Schools. Carolyn's teachers have included Diana Peele, Giovina Sessions, Marylou Speaker Churchill, Yeon-Su Kim and Elizabeth Chang. Schweickhard von Goeler, violin. A retired physicist, Schwick has been playing violin and viola for over 40 years in various amateur string quartets, and occasionally in orchestras He studied violin with Hildegard von Krafft and Joseph Krch. Carol Hutter, violin. A graduate of the New England Conservatory with a Master's Degree from UMass, she played principal viola for Leonard Bernstein at Tanglewood, was a member of the Meridian Quartet, the Bel Canto Chamber Players, and the Arcadia Players, has played in the Binghamton, Hartford, Vermont, Sacramento, and Berkshire Symphonies, and is a long-time violist with the Springfield Symphony. She is a founding faculty member of the Community Music School of Springfield and the Northampton Community Music Center. Jenifer Gelineau, violin. A founder and faculty member of Red Oaks Strings, Jen teaches violin in her Holyoke studio and at Gerry's Music Shop in South Hadley, and has directed the Holyoke Public Schools Violin Program and the Holyoke Summer String Workshop. She plays in various groups including the Valley Light Opera orchestra. She studied violin with Isabelle Boggs, Marylou Speaker Churchill, Yeon-Su Kim and Elizabeth Chang. Torsten Nelson, violinist. An 8th grader at Frontier, he plays in his school orchestra and the Springfield Youth Sinfonia, and has played in the Western Massachusetts Regional Orchestra. He also plays saxophone and guitar - plus golf, baseball and basketball on his school's teams. He studies violin with Carol Hutter. Adelheid von Goeler, cello. An enthusiastic amateur musician, she loves playing chamber music. She also plays recorder and sings in small choirs and madrigal groups, including the Pioneer Valley Capella and, previously, the Musica Alta choir of Princeton University. She studied cello with Heilke Bultmann and Joan Thompson. Marina Garas, flute. A junior at UMass, she has a double major in Neuroscience and Biochemistry with a minor in Flute performance. She studies with Christopher Krueger and is involved in many ensembles, including the Marching Band. She works summers at Boston Children's Hospital and plans to go to medical school. She will be presenting a recital at Immanuel in December (details will be announced when available). William Helmcke, clarinet. Currently working on a Ph.D. in Music Theory at UMass, he holds a Bachelor's degree in Music Education from the University of Illinois and a Master's in Music Theory from the University of Minnesota. He has taught and conducted at the high school and college level, and has presented research papers at national and international meetings. Rebecca Long, clarinet. Currently working on a Ph.D. in Music Theory at UMass, she holds a Bachelor's degree in Music Theory from the University of Arkansas and a Masters in Music Theory from the University of Southern Mississippi. A Texan, she enjoys visual arts and comedy. John Mange, conductor. A sophomore at UMass majoring in music with concentrations in trumpet performance, music education, and music theory, he is a member of the Wind Ensemble, Orchestra, and Minuteman Marching Band. He studies trumpet with Eric Berlin, and conducting with Lanfranco Marcelletti. Anne Weaver, director. A primary care physician, both an internist and a pediatrician, she was formerly a professional flutist. She started teaching flute at age 10 and soloed with the Baltimore Symphony at age 15; she later taught and performed throughout the Pioneer Valley. She has a BA from Wellesley College, a Master of Music from UMass, and an M.D. from UMass Medical School. She has directed the Immanuel Lutheran Church Choir for most of the past 40 years.
