Rev. Margaret Payne,

a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church,

was installed as Bishop of the New England Synod

on Sunday, September 17, 2000

at Trinity Lutheran Church, Worcester

Pastor Margaret Payne was elected Bishop of the New England Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America on Friday, June 2, 2000, at the Synod Assembly in Sturbridge, MA. Bishop-elect Payne is only the third woman Lutheran bishop in the nation and the fifth throughout the world. We congratulate her, we pray for her, and we wish her the very best as she assumes this important leadership role in the wider church.

The Installation Eucharist of Bishop Margaret G. Payne
was held on September 17, 2000, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Worcester, Massachusetts. ELCA Presiding Bishop H. George Anderson presided in her installation and New Jersey Synod Bishop E. Roy Riley, Jr. preached a wonderful and uplifting installation sermon. A combined choir (including our own choir) and instrumental ensemble provided special music. A reception and time of fellowship followed the Liturgy. The Psalm setting that was sung at the service, written by our own Anne Weaver, received special praise by Bishop Anderson and others. Also, Bob Weaver was the Assisting Minister for the Bishop's Installation service.
